I learned through wasted efforts and mistakes so you don't have to. One of the best ways to make the most of your time and reach gain goals is by making use of compound exercises. If you do not know one these are, they are multi-joint movements. Things like squats, deadlifts, bench presses, etc. 

What these particular exercises do internally is trigger a greater hormonal response leading to not only better gains but better recovery. If you don't work out enough muscles at once, you also run the risk of injury. Making sure certain sets of muscles are strengthened together is key!

Agreed! You want to hit multiple muscle groups at once but keep things on rotation to allow for proper recovery. This format also prevents you from injuring yourself, as you mentioned. It is something I was taught many moons ago and it is tried and true.
